Global Entrepreneurs from Ireland ?

Why would any entrepreneur chose Ireland as the headquarters for her global start-up ?

I’m not a spokesman for the Irish Government nor any of its myriad of agencies and civil servants. But that was the question which we discussed over dinner last night, quite robustly it must be said, between members of the US based team for Enterprise Ireland (EI) and some of the 30 Irish based IT CEOs attending the Leadership For Growth programme. This one year programme is organised by EI and the Irish Software Association, together with the CLG Executive Coaching, some experienced Irish technology business coaches, and hosted here this week at the Stanford Graduate Business School from where I write this blog entry.

I think any business visitor to Ireland today will be confused by the image which the country presents. On the one hand, Ireland appears to be thriving, with evidence of strong economic growth driven by a combination of indigenous and multinational companies. Dublin, Galway, Cork and Limerick are all exciting cities, with young and dynamic societies. On the other hand, there is clearly so much which is broken. The physical transport system is still very poor indeed, with long commutes, and highways which are frequently car parks. The health system seems to be a black hole and, despite larger public investment as a proportion of GDP (currently abut 6%) than many other countries, appears to fall very far behind what is available elsewhere. Labour and housing costs are expensive. The corporate legislative environment is onerous and burdensome. Personal taxation, with the top tax band at 41% is moderate compared to other European countries but the tax band threshold is quickly reached by most professional staff.

Joe Macri, an ebullient Australian friend, and the current head of Microsoft in Ireland, spoke forthrightly recently that the sole reason that multinationals stay in Ireland is to avail of the low corporate tax rate of 12.5%. Past advantages have been eroded by international competition: it is no longer the quality of the Irish workforce, or cost competitiveness, or the telecommunications infrastructure, or anything else. If he and the American Chamber of Commerce are right, then clearly Ireland needs to grow its own indigenous companies and entrepreneurs to sustain economic growth as multinationals in due course move elsewhere.

Michael O’Leary, of Ryanair, is probably the most outstanding CEO which Ireland has yet produced. Ryanair is now amongst the most profitable and largest of the global airlines. Peter Conlon – himself a highly experienced technology entrepreneur – nominated O’Leary at dinner last night as the role model which Enterprise Ireland should adopt, and I think Peter is correct. And there are others who come to mind: Liam O’Mahony, CEO of CRH, a company which has global presence through outstanding execution of M&A; Eddie O’Connor, CEO of airtricity, ironically having far more success with wind farms outside of Ireland – such as Texas – than at home; and Liam Fitzgerald of United Drug, who has built a highly regarded company. Noticeably ablower cost, economies which the immigrant communities create, are enabling relatively easy off-shoring opportunities to globally compete with world class products, of Irish based innovation, with high value propositions.

Ultimately, the striking observation is that the most successful world class entrepreneurs based in Ireland, have done so despite the challenges: the physical infrastructure, even the physical location of Ireland, the cost challenges, and the frequently dysfunctional civil service. The Irish have historically been the “under-dogs”, and rise to the challenge. Ireland has now become culturally deeply entrepreneurial, with a deep “can do” attitude swelling in its national psyche.

I know a German CEO who relocated herself from Munich to Dublin last year to found her global company, which is based on a highly innovative and insightful use of web 2.0 social community technology. Watch out for Anna Kupka and Ammado. I suspect there will be many more like her.

    Hi Chris.Nice article. Recently there has been some discussion about Irish and UK Entrepreneurs who have relocated to Silicon Valley http://www.edenweb.co.uk/blog/2007/02/14/lost/Mike Butcher at VecoSys could list some UK Tech Entrepreneurs that have flown West. Can you think of any Irish talent that is now residence over the pond?

    Hi Peter,Interestingly, the Irish Ambassador to the US, Noel Fahy (who was here in Stanford yesterday), earlier this week hosted the inaugural meeting of the Irish “network” organisation in the Bay Area for Irish ex-pats, particularly those working in the tech industry. I understand that the San Fran consulate wildly underestimated the number of attendees (I think that over a 100 attended). There is some great Irish talent in the Valley – some ex-IONA it has to be said :-). One or two experienced Irish have returned home to lead their own high tech companies — Donal Byrne of Corvil (www.corvil.com) comes to mind.There’s also a good number of Irish high tech folks in the DC, NY and Boston areas, with associated “networks”.Finally, there is an informal network of Irish and Irish American senior excutives working in the corporate sector (VP level at Fortune 2000 companies) such as Brian Ruane of Bank of New York; John Hartnett at Palm; Walter O’Hara at Allen&Co; Brendan McDonagh of HSBC; Kevin Melia ex Digital/Sun CFO/founder-CEO of NYSE:MSV; amongst several others. Kevin by the way is a long standing friend and is the IONA Chair.

    Chris,As someone on the US side of the pond 4 awhile and back n forth a bit; I can c both sides of the coin.I don’t c any magic or quick answers but the work EI and others are doing seem 2b the steps in the right direction.However as Fergus has indicated (and I’m sure the majority of ‘latest’ startups in IRL) its now more at the bottom level i.e. its quicker and cheaper 2 get up and running these days and try and prove your model.The “connections” into the USA (as it leads the Web/Enterprise 2.0 or whatever name u want 2 put on it) is paramount to those young striving startups outa IRL. This “new” world still requires the introductions and connections that the “old” guard still has.Hence the on-the-ground networks in the Valley, Boston, NY and other locations are key. Your wining-n-dining (thru Stanford programme) puts u in the right spot 2 make those connections but how does that work 4 the younger startups that don’t have those connections nor euro’s in their pockets nor that ‘network’.Eye theirs the rub!Lal

    There’s quite strong networks in the tech community here in Ireland too – at long last, they weren’t too strong IMHO in the early-mid 90s. Wish we had a way to efficiently federate the respective netowrks. In the case of the early days of IONA, we did it on a shoestring too: no VC money, no bank loans, no family’n’friends, no physical presence in the US, and did everything over the net plus telesales. EI do a great job now (they didn’t exist in early days of IONA..) again IMHO in their overseas offices helping young companies get a foothold. The Stanford programme is being funded by EI and by each of the 30 companies participating. EI are right now considering whether to run the programme again next year (starting next fall), would there be sufficient interest, is the current progamme having a strong enough impact etc..

    Chris, I remember on a visit to New York in the late 90’s trying to fund raise, when everyone was a dot.com we were an R&D play in pharma and some smart a”” investment banker asked a stupid question like “So what makes you guys think you can build a global business from Ireland?”Knowing full well that we were not going to get a single cent from this particular group I smartly responded by saying to all those present (9 including myself and Tony Richardson – then CFO, now CEO of < HREF="http://www.alltracel.com" REL="nofollow">Alltracel Pharmaceuticals Plc<>)“If you look at the world map behind you on the wall, you will see that Ireland is at the centre. What other position would you want to start a global business from?”After the embarassment of the idiot who asked the question as his colleagues laughed saying “He has a point Geoff…” We too this as a good point to close the meeting and moved on to the next presentation.Taking the virtual world to the limits right now and out-sourcing we are pushing yet another boundary and building a system with more than 20 developers online – none of which I have ever met in two years.Gerry
